The border between Denmark and Sweden is a land border that runs for approximately 140 kilometers from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea. The border is largely defined by the Oresund Strait, which separates Denmark's easternmost region of Skane from Sweden's southern province of Scania. Historically, the border has been marked by a variety of physical and administrative landmarks, including rivers, lakes, and customs checkpoints. Since the two countries are both members of the Schengen Area, border crossings are generally hassle-free for EU citizens, although there may be occasional checks for non-EU nationals and goods. The Oresund Bridge, a major engineering feat that opened in 2000, spans the strait and connects Denmark's capital of Copenhagen with the Swedish city of Malmo, making travel between the two countries more convenient than ever.
